A 13-year-old girl has been raped while on holiday with her parents in Corfu, it emerged today.

The youngster was attacked after being lured to a remote spot in the town of Sydari towards the end of the school holidays, local media reported.

An 18-year-old Albanian man has been charged with rape and misleading a minor and will face trial later this year.

The family are understood to have returned home to Scotland.

Five alleged rapes against British nationals have been reported on the Greek island of Corfu in the last three months, according to the Foreign Office.

Consular staff on the popular island resort were made aware of the separate claims on June 21, July 18, July 19 and July 25, officials revealed.

Concerns have been raised in recent weeks about safety on Corfu and other Greek islands, which are havens for thousands of British sunseekers each year.

Allegations have also been made that authorities have been withholding the true statistics about rapes because of fears about their effect on tourism.
