Athens in Greece
one of the most unconventional galleries located in the heart of the Metaxourgeio District. Day after day this area turns into an artistic and cultural blooming field. Atopos Contemporary Visual Culture is a cultural institution dedicated to the study and appreciation of the human body through the artistic praxis.
Every time I attend an art event at Atopos it turns out to be an enlightening experience. The gallery is notable to many for its radical curatorial methods. Visually extravagant performances, cutting-edge art installations, groundbreaking projects such as “Atopos BlahBlahBlah” talks and lectures take place almost every other month. Since 2003 the organisation has developed an international network of independent artists, galleries and museums that explore uncommon aesthetic forms of representation of the human figure in art by challenging obsolete social constructions of sexuality and gender.
Furthermore, Atopos CVC operates as a library including new and rare publications whose main topic is art, photography and design. The building that houses the institution is a restored typical early 20th century Athenian residence at 72 Salaminos Street. Thus, a visit to Atopos CVC could be a unique opportunity for architecture lovers to get a glimpse of the nineteenth-century urban/neoclassical architecture formulated in Athens.
